The IMSA overall champion and the question of a grid entry to the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
From the IMSA title to Le Mans: when a grid spot at the Sarthe comes automatically — and when it does not.

The short answer is: Yes — but not automatically because of the title.

There is a close technical and sporting connection between the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Even so, an overall win in the North American championship does not automatically lead to a guaranteed grid spot at the most famous endurance race in the world.

Who decides the entry list?

The entry list for the 24 Hours of Le Mans is published by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO). Together with the FIA, the ACO decides which cars and teams are admitted to the race.

A team can qualify in several ways:

  • automatic invitations (“Automatic Invitations”)
  • taking part in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC)
  • selection by the ACO after an application and on sporting criteria

An IMSA title alone is not among the criteria for a guaranteed grid spot in the top class.

Why is there no automatic entry for the IMSA overall champion?

Historically there were numerous automatic invitations for the winners of major endurance series. However, these were aimed mostly at teams in the GT and LMP2 classes.

With the introduction of the Hypercar category the situation changed considerably. The entry of the top class is today shaped strongly by the factory teams of major manufacturers. The available grid spots are limited and are awarded primarily to:

  • WEC manufacturers
  • WEC teams
  • additional factory entries
  • selected guest entries

That is why today there is no automatic Le Mans entry for the IMSA overall champion of the GTP class.

Why do you still see almost all IMSA manufacturers at Le Mans?

The reason lies in the shared technical platform.

The North American GTP class is based on the same technical Hypercar regulations as the Hypercar class of the FIA WEC. As a result, manufacturers can in principle run their cars both in North America and at Le Mans.

The manufacturers include, for example:

For these manufacturers Le Mans is one of the most important goals of the season. They therefore enter their cars regardless of the outcome of the IMSA championship.

Are there any automatic invitations from IMSA at all?

Yes.

The ACO still awards automatic invitations to selected winners of North American championships. However, these mainly concern:

  • GT categories
  • Pro-Am classifications
  • individual endurance or class successes

Which IMSA classes are considered can change from season to season. These invitations do not apply to the overall win of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Can an IMSA champion still win Le Mans?

Absolutely.

Many teams and drivers contest both IMSA and the FIA World Endurance Championship. Manufacturers such as Porsche Penske Motorsport or Cadillac Racing often run programs on both continents.

An IMSA champion therefore regularly starts at the 24 Hours of Le Mans as well — not because of an automatic entry right, but because their manufacturer or team receives an entry accepted by the ACO.
