Does the IMSA Overall Champion Get to Race the 24 Hours of Le Mans?

The short answer is: Yes — but not automatically because of the title.

There is a close technical and sporting connection between the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Even so, an overall win in the North American championship does not automatically lead to a guaranteed grid spot at the most famous endurance race in the world.

Who decides the entry list?

The entry list for the 24 Hours of Le Mans is published by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO). Together with the FIA, the ACO decides which cars and teams are admitted to the race.

A Full Course Yellow (FCY) is one of the defining elements of an IMSA endurance race. Almost no other intervention by race control changes the course of a race so dramatically. While the neutralization primarily serves safety, it also shapes strategies, pit stops and often even the outcome of a race.

In endurance classics such as the Rolex 24 at Daytona or Petit Le Mans, Full Course Yellow periods regularly determine which teams end up fighting for the win.

The IMSA SportsCar Championship is one of the most important endurance championships in the world. Its hallmark is the multi-class race: prototypes and GT cars share the same track at the same time. With its entry into the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Manthey considerably expands its international commitment. After numerous successes in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), the Nürburgring Endurance Series (NLS), the 24 Hours of Nürburgring and the DTM, the team is competing for the first time under its own name in North America’s most important sports car championship from 2026.

Manthey does not, however, focus on the full IMSA season. The team competes exclusively in the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup and thereby contests the five tradition-rich endurance races of the calendar.
